Type D — Settlement Permit - Gainful Employment

The Settlement Permit – Gainful Employment is an Austrian residence permit for skilled professionals who secure binding employment with a specific employer. It permits both employed and self-employed work but remains employer-tied. The visa requires a valid employment contract, adequate accommodation, comprehensive health insurance, and demonstrated financial means without state assistance.

This permit is issued for 12 months and is renewable; holders meeting Module 1 of the Integration Agreement (German B1) and maintaining 2+ years of lawful residence may extend to 3 years. Processing takes 56–180 days with a EUR 120 fee. Dependents may reside; spouses have restricted work rights. The permit provides a pathway to long-term settlement, subject to annual quotas.
