Z Visa (工作签证)

The Z Visa (Work Visa) was established under the 1985 Law on the Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners and has been refined through subsequent regulations to strictly regulate foreign employment. It fills the critical gap of providing a legal pathway for foreign nationals to take up formal, paid employment in China. By requiring a work permit from a China-based employer before the visa can be issued, the Z Visa ensures that the government can verify the legitimacy of the employment and the qualifications of the foreign worker, maintaining control over the domestic labor market.

This visa is for foreign nationals who have secured a job offer from a registered Chinese employer and have obtained the necessary work permit. It is the only visa category that legally permits the holder to work and receive a salary in China. The Z Visa is distinctive because it is a temporary entry document that must be converted into a residence permit for work purposes upon arrival. Applicants must typically possess at least a Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant professional experience, reflecting the government's focus on attracting qualified foreign talent.
