The EEA/EFTA registration is a mandatory process for citizens of European Economic Area (EEA) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries who intend to stay in Iceland for more than three months. This registration grants the individual a legal domicile in Iceland and an Icelandic identification number (kennitala), which is essential for accessing public services, banking, and employment. Unlike non-EEA nationals, these citizens do not require a formal residence permit but must demonstrate that they have a valid basis for their stay, such as being employed, enrolled in an educational institution, or having sufficient financial resources to support themselves without becoming a burden on the Icelandic social welfare system.

The process is designed to facilitate the freedom of movement within the EEA. Applicants must register with Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá) upon arrival or within a reasonable timeframe after the three-month mark. The registration process is relatively straightforward, focusing on verifying the applicant's identity and their reason for residing in the country. Once registered, EEA/EFTA citizens enjoy the same rights as Icelandic citizens regarding access to the labor market and social services, provided they maintain their status.
