If you asked which African country wins the most Canadian skilled-worker invitations, most people would say Nigeria. Largest economy on the continent, enormous diaspora, dominates the conversation.

The answer is Cameroon, and it isn't close.

In 2024, Canada issued 98,903 Express Entry invitations to apply. India took 43,004, which surprises nobody. Cameroon took 10,141 — second place. Nigeria was third at 6,696, China fourth at 3,689 and the Philippines fifth at 2,561.

Cameroon has roughly a seventh of Nigeria's population. It received one and a half times as many invitations.

Why: one category is eating the programme

Canada runs category-based selection alongside its general Express Entry draws. Rather than inviting the highest-scoring candidates regardless of profile, these rounds target specific groups — and they invite at dramatically lower scores.

In 2024, category rounds accounted for 42,475 invitations, 43 per cent of the total, split like this:

• French-language proficiency: 23,000
• Healthcare occupations: 10,250
• STEM occupations: 4,500
• Trade occupations: 3,600
• Transport occupations: 975
• Agriculture and agri-food: 150

French took more than half of all category invitations, and more than healthcare, STEM, trades, transport and agriculture combined.

Then 2025 made it bigger. Canada issued 113,998 invitations across 58 draws, and 59 per cent came through category-based selection. French-language proficiency alone accounted for 48,000 across just nine draws — more than double its 2024 volume, from about a sixth of the year's rounds.

The effect on the score you need is the part that matters. French-category draws in 2025 invited at CRS scores between 379 and 481. General draws have required scores in the 500s. For a candidate who would never clear a general draw, that range is not a marginal advantage — it is the entire question.

Cameroon is officially bilingual with a large francophone majority. Its candidates walk straight into the largest category Canada operates.

The UK is the mirror image

Move to Britain and the ranking inverts. For the year ending March 2026, the top ten nationalities for Skilled Worker grants were India (23,746), the United States (7,887), Pakistan (5,663), China (4,483), Nigeria (4,015), Germany (3,716), the Philippines (3,656), Italy (3,361), South Africa (3,073) and Kenya (2,160) (likely - Home Office data as compiled by a third party; the department's own summary publications don't carry the nationality table, so this sits one step from the primary source).

Three African countries in the top ten, and Cameroon nowhere at all. The UK has no French-language route, so the mechanism that lifts Cameroon in Canada simply doesn't exist there.

But the pool is shrinking fast, and these figures are from the Home Office directly. In the year ending June 2026, Skilled Worker visas fell 26 per cent to 61,120. Total work visas came to 234,841 — down 18 per cent year on year and down 62 per cent from the December 2023 peak. Health and Care Worker visas totalled 34,143, a 90 per cent collapse from that same peak, after the entry-clearance route for care workers closed in July 2025.

That last number matters more than any other for African applicants. The Home Office's own analysis attributes the 2021-2023 surge largely to South Asian and sub-Saharan African nationals - Zimbabwean, Ghanaian and Nigerian - arriving as care workers. That route carried the volume, and it is gone.

What the two systems are actually telling you

Nationality isn't the variable. Category is. Cameroon doesn't beat Nigeria in Canada because Canada prefers Cameroonians. It wins because Canada is buying French and Cameroon has it. Find what a country is short of, and the bar drops.

Language is the most undervalued qualification in skilled migration. Every conversation about moving abroad is about degrees, salary and years of experience. In the single largest category of the largest skilled-migration programme in the anglophone world, the qualifying attribute is a second language — and unlike your age or your nationality, it's the one you can go and acquire.

The same person ranks differently in different systems. A Nigerian engineer is mid-table in Canada and top-five in the UK. A Cameroonian with the same degree is second in Canada and invisible in Britain. Neither is better qualified. They're matched to different machines.

And the doors move fast. The UK's care route carried over 100,000 people a year and then shut. Canada's agriculture category received 150 invitations in 2024 and has been removed from the 2026 category list entirely, while medical doctors, researchers, senior managers and skilled military recruits were added. What worked two years ago is not a guide to what works now.

What this means for you

• Francophone, or willing to become francophone? Canada's French category is the lowest-barrier high-volume route in skilled migration today, and it grew from 23,000 to 48,000 invitations in a single year. Worth knowing before spending two years chasing a general-draw score you may never reach.
• Nigerian, Kenyan or South African? The UK still grants meaningful numbers to all three, but the pool has more than halved and the care route is closed. Check which occupations the remaining volume is going to before building a plan on it.
• Anywhere else on the continent? The lesson isn't "apply to Canada" or "apply to the UK." It's that the door opens where the shortage is, the shortage is published every year, and almost nobody reads it before choosing a country.
