Unified work and residence permit for researchers at BELSPO-recognized institutions, renewable up to 3 years.
The Single Permit for Researchers is Belgium's unified work and residence authorization for non-EU nationals at BELSPO-recognized institutions. It combines both authorizations into one simplified application, eliminating the previously fragmented multi-agency process. Core qualification requires a valid hosting agreement, proof of sufficient means, and standard health and criminal checks.
The permit is renewable and valid for up to three years (the duration of the research project). The contribution fee is EUR 152. Processing takes 60 days from submission. Spouses may work unrestricted. The permit leads to permanent residence and qualifies holders for a one-year search permit after project completion to pursue employment or start a business.
This visa is ideal for post-doctoral scholars, scientists, and academic researchers from outside the EU seeking long-term work and residence in Belgium while conducting structured research under institutional sponsorship.
