W-1 — Work Permit

The Canadian Work Permit authorizes foreign nationals to work for a specific employer in Canada. Most applicants require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from their employer proving no suitable Canadian worker is available. The permit is employer-specific and tied to the approved job offer.

Duration is tied to the employment contract or LMIA validity. The permit is renewable, and spouses of qualifying holders may obtain an Open Work Permit. The application fee is CAD 155, plus CAD 100 for open work permit holders. Holders may pursue permanent residency via Express Entry or provincial programs.
