Overview

Temporary residency for spouses of Costa Rican citizens with work authorization and a pathway to permanent residency after 3 consecutive years.

Residency by Marriage (Residencia por Matrimonio con Costarricense) is Costa Rica's family-based pathway for foreign nationals married to Costa Rican citizens. Marriage must be registered with the Civil Registry; applicants must maintain lawful status. The process includes interviews and proof of genuine cohabitation, especially for marriages under two years old, to prevent fraud.

Temporary residency grants 1 year, renewable annually for up to three consecutive years. Fees include a USD 251 application fee plus costs for the DIMEX card, apostilles, and translations. Both spouses can work and own businesses. After three consecutive years of residency, applicants are qualifying for permanent residency, creating a clear long-term pathway.

This visa is ideal for foreign nationals married to Costa Rican citizens who seek legal work authorization and eventual permanent settlement.
