Vocational Training Visa

Germany's Vocational Training Visa (Section 16a) lets third-country nationals pursue state-recognized apprenticeships — in-company or school-based — in fields from nursing and mechatronics to IT. A signed Ausbildungsvertrag and German B1 proficiency are required; applicants are typically under 35.

The visa covers the training period (usually 2–3 years) and is renewable. A secondary job up to 20 hrs/week is permitted. Without an adequate training salary, EUR 11,904 in a blocked account is required. Dependents can join; spouses work unrestricted. Completion leads directly to a skilled-worker or settlement permit.
