Diplomatic & Consular Personnel Exemption

The Diplomatic and Consular Personnel Exemption is a high-level immigration status granted to representatives of foreign governments, diplomatic staff, and consular officials entering Fiji to perform their official duties. Under Section 8(1)(d) of the Immigration Act 2003, these individuals are entitled to enter, reside, and work in Fiji without the requirement of obtaining a standard permit. This exemption recognizes the international norms of diplomatic immunity and the special privileges extended to foreign government representatives under Fijian law, ensuring they can carry out their professional responsibilities without administrative barriers.

This exemption is specifically reserved for serving diplomatic or consular personnel and, in many cases, extends to their official staff and immediate family members. Because this status is based on international agreements and national legislation regarding diplomatic privileges, the application fee is waived for those who qualify. Applicants must demonstrate their official status through appropriate government documentation. This status remains valid for the duration of the individual's official engagement in Fiji. Once the diplomatic or consular service concludes, the exemption status also ends, and the individuals are expected to depart or adjust their status according to Fijian immigration laws.
