Tourist/Visitor Entry (Visa-Exempt)

The tourist entry for visa-exempt nationals is the most common way to visit Guatemala. Citizens from a wide range of countries, including the United States, Canada, the European Union, and Australia, are classified as Category A and can enter the country for tourism, family visits, or business for up to 90 days without a formal visa. Upon arrival, travelers receive an entry stamp in their passport, which serves as their legal authorization to remain in the country. This system is designed to facilitate tourism and short-term professional engagement while maintaining security through the mandatory electronic traveler's affidavit.

Guatemala is a signatory to the Central America-4 (CA-4) Border Control Agreement, which means the 90-day allowance is shared among Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Travelers should be aware that moving between these countries does not reset the 90-day clock. If a visitor wishes to stay beyond the initial 90 days, they must apply for an extension at the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración. Failure to depart before the expiration of the authorized stay results in a daily fine, which must be settled with immigration authorities before leaving the country.
