Overview

Join your Hong Kong resident sponsor as a spouse, child, or parent; grants work authorization and residency.

The Hong Kong Dependent Visa enables family reunification, allowing spouses and unmarried children under 18 to join a Hong Kong permanent resident or resident admitted for employment, investment, or study. Parents aged 60+ may join only if the sponsor is a Hong Kong permanent resident. The application requires proof of genuine relationship, sponsor financial capacity, and suitable accommodation.

Spouses may work independently without additional sponsorship. The visa is renewable as long as the sponsor maintains residency. Processing takes approximately 4-6 weeks, with a visa fee of HKD 230. The dependent's right to remain depends on the sponsor's Hong Kong residency status.

This visa is ideal for families of international professionals, investors, and students seeking to maintain household unity while living in Hong Kong.

Requirements

PUBLISHED REQUIREMENTS

The sponsor must be a Hong Kong permanent resident, or a resident who is not subject to a limit of stay, or a person admitted to Hong Kong to take up employment (as a professional, for investment, or for training) or study.

There must be reasonable proof of a genuine relationship between the applicant and the sponsor.

The sponsor must be able to support the dependent's living standard at a level well above the subsistence level.

The sponsor must provide suitable accommodation in Hong Kong.

Qualifying dependents include: spouse (including same-sex spouse if legally recognized), unmarried dependent children under 18, and parents aged 60 or above (only if the sponsor is a Hong Kong permanent resident).

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Application form ID 997 (Part A for applicant, Part B for sponsor).

Recent photograph of the applicant.

Copy of applicant's valid travel document.

Proof of relationship (e.g., marriage certificate, birth certificate).

Copy of sponsor's Hong Kong identity card and travel document.

Proof of sponsor's financial standing (e.g., bank statements, tax receipts, salary slips).

Proof of sponsor's accommodation in Hong Kong (e.g., tenancy agreement).

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • Visa fee only HKD 230 — one of the lowest for dependent/family visas
  • Spouse can work without restrictions throughout Hong Kong
  • 4-6 week processing time — predictable timeline for family reunification
  • No skill or education requirements — purely relationship and financial based
  • Renewable visa linked to sponsor's residency status in Hong Kong
  • Covers spouse, children under 18, and parents aged 60+ (if sponsor is permanent resident)
  • Deferral of income requirement compared to primary work visas

Worth Knowing

  • Visa validity entirely dependent on sponsor maintaining Hong Kong residency
  • Requires documented proof of sponsor's financial capacity to support dependents at a level well above subsistence
  • Strict family relationship documentation required (birth, marriage, or adoption certificates)
  • Max stay tied directly to sponsor's visa validity or residency status
  • Visa revoked immediately if sponsor loses residency or departs Hong Kong
