The Volunteer Visa (Type D) is a long-stay national visa for non-EU citizens aged 25 to 35 seeking recognized volunteer work with Italian non-profit organizations, religious bodies, or NGOs. The sponsoring organization must obtain authorization from the Italian Prefecture before the applicant applies at their local consulate. Health insurance is mandatory.
The visa is valid for up to one year per Article 27-bis of Legislative Decree 286/1998. The EUR 116 application fee is the sole cost. Upon arrival, volunteers register with local police within eight days for their residence permit. No work authorization is provided, and the visa is not renewable or convertible to employment permits.
