The Temporary Visitor is Japan's short-term residence status for foreign nationals arriving for tourism, family visits, conferences, or brief business meetings, with no paid work permitted. Citizens of 70+ countries enter visa-free for up to 90 days; others apply through a Japanese consulate or the JAPAN eVISA system.

Visa applicants pay 15,000 JPY (single-entry) or 30,000 JPY (double/multiple-entry); the Transit Visa category was discontinued and merged into these two categories from 1 July 2026. Processing takes 5 working days under normal conditions. Work — including remote — is strictly prohibited. The visa is non-renewable with no pathway to permanent residence.

This visa is ideal for travellers making a short leisure or business trip to Japan who do not need — or are non-qualifying for — the visa-free entry program.

Must be a foreign national intending to visit Japan for short-term purposes such as tourism, business meetings, conferences, or visiting friends/relatives.

Must possess a valid passport with at least two blank pages.

Must have sufficient financial means to cover all expenses during the stay.

Must have a clear, detailed itinerary for the duration of the trip.

Must not intend to engage in remunerative activities or work while in Japan.

Must comply with all entry requirements and health regulations set by the Japanese government.
