Type D — Employment Visa

The Employment Visa is a long-stay (Type D) national visa designed for third-country nationals (TCNs) who have secured a confirmed job offer from a Malta-registered employer. It serves as the essential entry clearance for non-EU citizens intending to live and work in Malta for a period exceeding 90 days. This visa bridges the gap between a foreign national's initial job offer and the subsequent issuance of a formal residence and work authorisation, such as a Single Permit. The application process, which carries a standard fee of EUR 150, ensures that the applicant has been vetted and has a legitimate, documented purpose for residing in the country to fill a specific role within the local labour market.

This visa is intended for professionals and workers from outside the EU/EEA who possess the necessary skills and qualifications for their role. Ideal applicants must have a signed employment contract and, in many cases, proof that the employer has attempted to fill the position locally through a labour market test. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and typically need to demonstrate relevant experience—often a minimum of three years—or provide proof of qualifications that have been recognised by the Malta Qualifications Recognition Information Centre (MQRIC). It is a distinctive, tied-status visa that requires the employer to be actively involved in the application process, ensuring that the foreign worker is legally authorised to contribute to Malta’s economy.
