Official Information

Overview

Family reunification pass for spouses and children of Employment Pass and Student Pass holders in Malaysia.

The Dependent Pass is Malaysia's family reunification visa for spouses and unmarried children under 18 of Employment Pass or Student Pass holders. The principal's employer petitions on behalf of the dependent. Applicants must provide proof of relationship (marriage/birth certificates) and the sponsor's valid EP or SP.

Processing takes 14 working days. The ESD application fee is MYR 500 (MYR 540 with 8% SST), plus MYR 90 annually for the DP endorsement and MYR 50 immigration processing fee. Dependents can reside for the duration of the sponsor's pass but cannot work; to seek employment, they must convert to an Employment Pass separately.

This visa is ideal for international professionals and students who wish to bring their immediate family to Malaysia while maintaining their primary work or study visa.

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • Family reunification—spouses and unmarried children under 18 live with the principal visa holder
  • Valid for duration of principal sponsor's visa, renewable in tandem with sponsor's pass
  • Legal residence status for dependents to live, study, or stay in Malaysia
  • Covers legal spouses and unmarried children under 18 with proof of relationship
  • Spouse work authorization possible through separate Employment Pass application
  • Employer or sponsor initiates application; dependents do not apply directly

Worth Knowing

  • Processing takes 4-8 weeks; fees vary by nationality with additional Journey Performed fee (RM500+)
  • Dependent pass terminates if sponsor's pass is cancelled or expires—no independent stay permitted
  • Not available for all visa categories (e.g., some EP Category 3 or short-term passes)
  • No automatic work right without separate Employment Pass or work permit application
  • Relationship documentation must be officially translated and verified
  • Strictly contingent on principal's visa validity—cannot remain if sponsor's authorization ends

Application Process

1

The employer or sponsor of the principal pass holder submits the application through the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) portal or relevant agency (e.g., EMGS for students).

2

Prepare and upload all required supporting documents, including proof of relationship.

3

Pay the required processing fees (e.g., Journey Performed fee of RM500 plus other applicable visa fees).

4

Wait for the Immigration Department to review and approve the application.

5

Once approved, the dependent pass is issued and endorsed on the passport.

6

If the principal holder changes jobs or leaves the country, the dependent pass must be cancelled.
