It requires a higher education qualification and an employment contract with a salary exceeding the host member state's threshold, harmonizing standards across the EU to attract talent in specialized fields.

The visa is renewable for 1–4 years and often leads to permanent residency. Main application fee is SEK 2,000, with reduced rates for family members; processing takes 1–3 months. Spouses and children gain work authorization. After 12 months in the first member state, cardholders may transfer to another EU country under simplified conditions, enabling seamless intra-EU mobility.
