Overview

To undergo qualification measures or examinations to achieve full recognition of a foreign professional qualification.

The §16d AufenthG permit lets third-country nationals live in Germany to complete adaptation measures or exams needed for full recognition of a foreign professional qualification. Holders may work up to 20 hours per week in an unrelated role, or full-time in work directly tied to the qualification.

Granted for up to 24 months, renewable once by 12 months (3 years maximum). Applicants must hold a deficiency notice from the recognition authority, demonstrate at least A2 German, and show proof of financial means. Once fully recognised, holders can convert to a skilled worker permit or EU Blue Card.

This visa is ideal for foreign-trained professionals outside the EU who need to close a skills gap to achieve formal qualification recognition in Germany.
