The Research Visa is a specialized classification designed for foreign nationals, including research professors, scholars, and participants in academic expeditions, who intend to conduct research work in India. This visa is essential for those affiliated with recognized Indian universities or institutions and is granted based on the specific duration of the research project, often up to a maximum of three to five years depending on the project's scope. Applicants must provide detailed documentation, including a research synopsis, a formal invitation from the host institution in India, and evidence of financial resources to support their stay. It is a rigorous process that requires prior clearance from relevant Indian authorities to ensure the research aligns with national regulations.

Because this visa is intended for long-term academic engagement, applicants are advised to apply at least six weeks before their intended departure. The visa's validity is typically tied to the duration of the approved research project. It is important to note that dependents of the primary research visa holder generally receive an Entry Visa for a corresponding duration.
