Work Permit

The Work Permit is an essential authorization for foreign nationals seeking employment in semi-skilled or unskilled positions within Mauritius. Unlike the Occupation Permit, which is tailored for high-level professionals, investors, and entrepreneurs, the standard Work Permit is typically initiated by the employer on behalf of the foreign worker. Employers must demonstrate that they have made a genuine effort to recruit a local candidate before seeking to hire a foreign national. This permit ensures that the labor market remains balanced while allowing businesses to fill critical roles in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and hospitality. The permit is generally valid for the duration of the employment contract.

To be qualifying, the foreign national must be between the ages of 18 and 60 and meet the minimum income requirements, which are currently set at a minimum of 360,000 MUR per year. The application process requires the employer to submit a vetted employment contract to the Ministry of Labour, which outlines the terms of employment, including salary and working conditions. As part of the process, the worker must undergo medical screenings to ensure they are fit for employment. This permit provides a structured and legal framework for foreign workers to contribute to the Mauritian economy, ensuring they are protected under local labor laws while fulfilling the specific needs of their sponsoring companies.
