Residence permit for doctoral studies (Uppehållstillstånd för doktorandstudier)

Sweden's Residence Permit for Doctoral Studies enables researchers from outside the EU/EEA to pursue advanced research at Swedish universities. It requires formal admission to a full-time doctoral program and proof of financial support through employment, scholarship, or personal funds.

The permit is valid for the duration of studies, up to 4 years per grant. The base fee is SEK 1,500; fee waivers apply to scholarship holders (Sida, EU, Swedish Institute, Uppsala University ISP), WMU students, and Japanese citizens. Processing takes 30–90 days. Holders gain immediate work authorization and can pursue permanent residency or family reunification.
