Renewable residence permit of up to 5 years for non-EU researchers, doctoral candidates, and grant-funded researchers hosted by an IND-recognised Dutch institution.

The Netherlands Researcher permit, under Directive (EU) 2016/801, lets non-EU nationals work as paid researchers, doctoral candidates, or grant-funded unpaid researchers. The host institution must be IND-recognised and hold a hosting agreement or employment contract with the researcher.

Permits run up to 5 years and are renewable, with a path to permanent residence. Spouses may work without restriction. Researchers from other EU states can work in the Netherlands for up to 180 days under short-term mobility — no new permit needed. The EUR 254 fee is filed by the institution, not the researcher.

This visa is ideal for non-EU academics who have secured a research or PhD role at a recognised Dutch institution and want a renewable permit with family rights and EU mobility.

PUBLISHED REQUIREMENTS

Must be conducting research at a research institute in the Netherlands recognized by the IND as a sponsor.

Must have a higher education degree that grants access to a doctoral program.

Must have a hosting agreement or employment contract with the research institute.

Must earn sufficient income (at least the minimum wage or a percentage thereof).

Research project must be approved by the host institute.

Must meet general conditions (valid passport, no threat to public order).

For intra-EU mobility: must hold a valid residence permit for research under Directive (EU) 2016/801 from another EU Member State (excluding Denmark and Ireland).

Application Process

The recognized research institution must submit the application for the residence permit (and MVV if required) on behalf of the researcher.
